Our top tip: go scuba diving in Sultan's Reef alongside the schools of clownfish and bring an underwater camera if you can.
The old town of Onslow, rich with a pearl lugging past, was abandoned in 1925. Visit the displays of historic artefacts at the Good Shed Museum or see the remains of the police station and gaol. Get walking and gain some insight into the local town's history along the Heritage Trail Walk.
Fishing & Crabbing Spots
In the cooler months, Onslow is a joy to cast a line in. Around small creek mouths and in the Ashburton River are where you will find the area's best land-based fishing: queenfish, javelin, cod and flathead. Ready to go offshore? Head 10km out on your boat for some sweetlip and tuskfish. If dinner is calling for some critters, go crabbing in the tidal creeks at Beadon Bay. Dip a piece of crab in some garlic sauce and you got yourself a meal.
The Great Barrier Reef is worth writing home about, but what about that other reef? You know, the one on the west coast that boasts open water swimming with humpback whales. If you haven't heard about this marine paradise, it's about time you ask for some time off. You'll be looking forward to over 500 species of tropical fish that call these waters home, friendly (and harmless) whale sharks hanging out with their friends, and easy do-it-yourself beach snorkelling. The best part about this place: it's Australia's most easily accessible coral reef. It's your adventure for the making.
Walks
The Heritage Trail Walk is one of many paths to stretch your legs on. Pay tribute to the esteemed Western Australian police officer, Ian Blair, on the Ian Blair Memorial Walkway. Starting at Beadon's Point, this boardwalk stretches through native vegetation through to Sunset Beach. Fancy a termite mound instead? Built by spinifex termites, these sturdy structures are some of the tallest you will ever see (up to 7 metres high). Just 10km outside of the city of Onslow, venture out to the Termite Mound Viewing Area for these natural wonders.
