Things to do in Port Hedland: For the Off-Road Adventurer

Kicking this off is the Port Hedland to Marble Bar 4WD trail (203km). Start your adventure with a trip to Pretty Pool and admire the flourishing mangroves and awe-inspiring sea turtle hatchlings (which takes place from December to April). The best time to go is before the end of March, so stay close to the action at Discovery Parks - Port Hedland. The park is a hop, skip and jump from Pretty Pool and makes a convenient base while you go exploring.

Once you hit the road, look around for a moment to enjoy the diverse landscapes of the Pilbara region on your way down to Marble Bar and be sure to check your 4WD’s suspension as you venture across the temperamental Shaw River crossing.

Arriving into what is considered to be Australia’s hottest town (Marble Bar), cool off with a dip in Chinaman’s Pool and spend the afternoon exploring the colourful rock face between Coppins Gap and Doolena Gorge.

Things to do in Port Hedland: For the Quiet Wanderer

Reef Walks run by Care for Hedland offer a great opportunity to discover Port Hedland’s coastline. Shell collectors, reef walkers and photography enthusiasts can literally step into Port Hedland’s rich ecosystem and with a watchful eye, spot the occasional whale and bottlenose dolphin. Once the summer months have passed, it’s a great time to grab your fishing rod and take advantage of the wide variety of fishing opportunities around Port Hedland. For land fishers, a small number of fish can be caught in the Port Hedland harbour and is best enjoyed at sunset where a bustling port meets a golden horizon. If you’re looking to up the ante, big game fishing is popular with locals in the Eighty Mile Beach area. Marlin, sailfish and mackerel species are all known to populate the waters and is the perfect excuse to try your hand at deep-sea fishing.
